Lawn advice depends on where you live. Sward builds each state from its own university's research, adding a nearby university's guide where it fits your region. In Maryland and Virginia, it also follows the state's lawn-fertilizer law or standards. For example, a tall fescue lawn in Wake County, North Carolina, is told to spread new seed September 1 to 15, while one in Moore County is told September 15 to October 1.

Seasonal Calendar
A month-by-month plan for your grass and region from what your university publishes; where it publishes little or nothing for your grass, the plan is short or Sward says so. Every task names its source. In coastal and piedmont North Carolina, simple chores like an equipment check are marked as reminders. Check tasks off as you go.
Fertilizer Tracker
Where a university source gives them, shows when your feeding window is open and how much nitrogen (the main nutrient in lawn fertilizer) you've used against your grass's yearly nitrogen limit or range.
Mow Height Tracker
Log each mow with your cut height and, where a university source gives a recommended range, see if it's in it. Sward also reminds you to switch mowing direction.
Herbicide Conditions
Herbicides are weed killers. Sward compares today's temperature and wind with the spray limits your sources publish, and shows the rain chance next to what your source says about rain, or says it gives none. Where a university source gives a temperature caution for your grass instead of a limit, Sward shows that caution as the source states it.
Pre-Emergent Timing
When to put down a pre-emergent, a weed preventer that stops crabgrass before it sprouts, for your region, with the soil or air temperature cue your state's university gives, where it gives one. Where your sources give no date, Sward says so.
Water Tracker
Weekly watering compared with the university guidance for your area where it gives an amount, using the rain and irrigation you log plus an estimate of how much water your lawn loses to heat and sun.
7-Day Forecast
Local weather for your county, built into your lawn plan. If it fails to load, Sward tries once more on its own, then shows a Try again button.
Sage, your lawn assistant
Ask questions in plain English. Sage answers from Sward's sourced guidance for your state, region and grass, names its source, and says so when it doesn't know. It starts a fresh chat when you change your state, county or grass.
Weed Identifier
Snap a weed and Sward suggests what it may be, how to recognize it, and the ingredients to look for on a label, with the university source shown next to each line. In most states, where a university guide says two weeds resemble each other, it points out the look-alike. If no source names your grass for a weed killer, Sward says so and tells you to read the label. Works in every state Sward covers. Sward doesn't save your photo; our AI provider deletes it within 30 days. Always read the product label. Ask a local lawn expert, like your county Extension office (run by your state university).
Reminders
Reminders you choose to turn on: fertilizer windows; Calendar tasks such as pre-emergent and overseeding (spreading new seed), where your sources give a date; a Sunday recap; a Wednesday water check; a reminder when the time a product label says to stay off the lawn has passed; and blade-sharpening and mow-direction reminders.

  1. We start with your state's university. NC State in North Carolina, Clemson University in South Carolina, the University of Georgia in Georgia, Auburn University in Alabama, the University of Florida in Florida, Texas A&M in Texas, Oklahoma State University in Oklahoma, the University of Maryland in Maryland, Virginia Tech in Virginia. Where a nearby university's guide fits your region, Sward uses it too and names it.
  2. Calendar tasks and most cards on Home link to their source page. Tips name their source.
  3. Sward re-checks the numbers in its source records against the source pages before they reach the app.
  4. When sources differ, Sward never averages them. If their ranges overlap, it uses the part they agree on. If they don't, it shows what each source says, or follows the guide written for your specific grass. Where a state's lawn-fertilizer law or standards set a limit (Maryland and Virginia), the limit wins.
  5. When sources are silent, Sward says so. No made-up numbers to fill a gap.
  6. Products are your call. Sward shows the ingredients the university sources list for your grass and doesn't recommend products. Always read the product label, and ask a local lawn expert, like your county Extension office (run by your state university).

Which states and grasses does Sward cover?

Sward covers North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, Maryland and Virginia at launch, with more states being added. It supports Bermuda, Zoysia, Centipede, St. Augustine, Bahia, Buffalograss, Tall Fescue, Kentucky bluegrass and Fine fescue, plus blends of tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, fine fescue and perennial ryegrass in North Carolina, but which of those it offers depends on your region, so use the ZIP box at the top of the page to see yours. If your state or grass isn't covered, Sward says so during setup instead of giving you advice that doesn't fit.

Do I need lawn experience?

No. Sward is built for beginners. You enter your ZIP and grass, and it gives you plain steps for each month, and lawn terms are explained. If you want to know why, its advice shows where it came from.

How is Sage different from a general chatbot?

Sage is Sward's lawn assistant. It answers from the sourced lawn guidance for your state, region and grass, names the source, and says so when it doesn't know instead of guessing. It names active ingredients to look for on a label, never brands. It starts a fresh chat when you change your state, county or grass.

Does Sward sell products?

No. Sward doesn't sell products or recommend brands. It tells you which ingredients to look for on the label, and you choose the brand. Always read and follow the product label.

Are my weed photos saved?

Sward doesn't keep your photos. Your phone shrinks the photo and removes the location and other hidden details. It goes through our server, which doesn't store or log it, to our AI provider, which deletes it within 30 days. Sward only counts how many photos you send, to apply daily and monthly limits.

How do I cancel?

Subscriptions are billed through your Apple account, so you cancel on your iPhone: open Settings, tap your name, then tap Subscriptions. To avoid being charged for the next period, cancel at least 24 hours before your trial or current period ends. New subscribers get a 7-day free trial, which converts to a paid plan automatically unless you cancel first.
